Welcome Back!

We hope everyone had a great summer!  We are looking forward to a wonderful year packed with active learning, hands-on explorations, and cooperative team effort.  We will be doing many research-based activities.  The students will be actively involved in gathering information. They will be expected to share their learning with peers through demonstrations and group projects. Fourth grade is a challenging year with many expectations.  By working together we know that we can make it a successful one.

Each day of school is dependent on the information from the previous day; therefore it is necessary that all assignments be completed on time to keep up with the expectations.  Your child will be filling out an assignment notebook everyday. It is the students’ responsibility to fill out the notebook correctly, take it home, and return it to school the following morning. You can be actively involved in your child’s education by checking this notebook over with your child each night and by verifying that all assignments are complete.  There is no signature required unless we see that your child is not turning in assignments.  In this case we will notify you about further procedures.

In the lives of children, you as parents are one of the most important roles in you child’s education.  One of our goals as fourth grade teachers is to teach your child to become a responsible and independent student.  We expect and encourage your involvement in this process.

Students are responsible for completing class assignments and homework on time.  If a student does not finish an assignment in class he/she will be responsible for finishing the assignment at home (with the exception of group projects). If an assignment is turned in late, 10% will be taken off the final grade.  Assignments not turned in at all will result in a zero.   Mrs. Brownfield will not be accepting late assignments.

The following is a list of supplies that your child will need:

Please have your child’s name on all items brought to school.  This would include all supplies as well as your child’s lunch bag and book-bag.  Anytime you need to send money to school, please send it in an envelope clearly marked with your child’s name and what it is for (lunch money, milk, book order, etc.).

Birthday treats are welcomed!  Please make sure all treats are individual portions.

Children respond best when they know what is expected of them.  The first week of school will be spent going over classroom rules and procedures.  Students will be using a positive reward system that allows them to monitor their own progress throughout the day.  At the end of each day, students who have had a good day will be rewarded with a “Super Citizen” slip.  This slip will put them in a drawing for a special ice cream treat during Friday’s lunch.  Students may also collect these slips and trade them in for an extra prize out of the classroom Treasure Box.

Every Friday you should expect to see a “Communication Log” come home with your child.  This log lets you know how your child is doing and keeps communication open between teacher and parent.  This log should be signed and returned to school every Monday.  Please note that this weekly log is not intended to inform you of your child’s grades.  It is just a notice to let you know if they have had any missing assignments for the week and if they have pulled any cards.  If you feel you need more information, please fill out the e-mail slip that is attached and return it to school with your child.

We look forward to a great year with your child.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.   There are times when we are not aware of problems or concerns until the parent has informed us.  We have provided our e-mail addresses for you; this is the best way to contact us.

Thank you,
